The European Passport

The European passport for pets relates to the domestic carnivores (dogs, cats, ferret) residing in the European Union where owners are seeking to move them to another member of the European Union or back to Europe, from a non-European country.

The European passport is made up of 32 pages and all pages (inside pages & covers) present a single identifier made of:

  • the ISO code of the country that realized the passport
  • initials of the editor of the passport
  • a number with eight digits

The European passport shows (or can show) various information such as:

  • the owner's details
  • the animal description
  • the animal identification information (including the number)
  • the anti-rabic vaccination
  • the anti-rabic titration
  • the treatment against ticks
  • the treatment against echinococcosis
  • the other vaccinations
  • the clinical examinations
  • the validations from organisations of legalisation
  • various indications

Pets moving inside the European Union, must satisfy the following conditions:

Pets coming from nearby countries(1) & which are to enter a European country, must satisfy the same conditions as for the members of the European Union.

Pets coming from third world countries whose situation regarding rabies is favourable(2) & which are to enter a European country, must satisfy these conditions:

  • identification
  • anti-rabic vaccination
  • health certificate attesting of an anti-rabic vaccination

Pets coming from third world countries whose situation regarding the rabies is not favourable(3) & which are to enter a European country, must satisfy these conditions:

  • identification
  • anti-rabic vaccination
  • serum titration of the anti-rabic antibodies in an approved laboratory with a result equal or higher than 0,5 UI/ml
  • original health certificate attesting of an anti-rabic vaccination in order and a test proving the effectiveness of the vaccine 3 months before this movement

(3) Countries not mentionned in (1) & (2)
