Legislation

The legislation concerning electronic identification of dogs and cats varies according to the country.

Dogs & Cats

In United Kingdom, currently, there are no compulsory rules on microchipping or identification means for dogs or cats in the UK. The only animals that have to be microchipped are those that are applying for a pet passport to take their animal abroad, this came into force in 2002.

Equine

In United Kingdom, in 2004, it became compulsory for horse owners to obtain a passport for each horse they own which clearly records all their markings.

2009 saw the introduction of the horse Passport Regulations in which compulsory microchipping came into force for foals and horses not previously identified.

Other horses that have to be microchipped are thoroughbred horses that race under the British Horseracing Authority rules, are registered with Weatherby’s or those horses that are competing abroad.
