This page contains information concerning the electronic identification of horses.
Passport regulations for horses
The Horse Passport Regulations 2004 states that all horse owners are to obtain a passport for each horse they own. Without a passport owners will not be able to sell, buy, export, slaughter for human consumption, use for competition or breeding.
Microchipping
In the United Kingdom in 2009 the horse Passport Regulations made it compulsory for all foals and horses to be microchipped if they had not previously been identified.
Obtaining a passport?
Every horse must have its own individual passport. To obtain one you must complete an application to one of the Passport Issuing Organisations (PIO’s) that have been authorised by Defra or the devolved administrations (Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales).
A list of recognised organisations who are able to issue passports can be found on the Defra website
Further information may be obtained from the Defra helpline on 08459 335577.
